PFAS in Australia: What You Need to Know
What Are PFAS?
Per- and Poly-fluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic compounds that have been produced commercially since the 1950s. PFAS were widely used in a variety of consumer goods—from waterproof clothing to non-stick kitchenware—to make products stain and stick resistant. PFAS have also been extensively used in industrial products, particularly in Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFFs) for firefighting.
Although these chemicals may no longer be produced in Australia, PFAS and related compounds can still be found in imported products or old stock still being used.
PFAS of Concern
Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are three compounds that attract particular concern. These substances do not decompose easily—meaning they are highly persistent in the environment. They can bioaccumulate in living organisms and be detected in air, water, and soil. Precursor compounds (e.g. perfluoroalkyl sulphonamides) may also form PFAS, making their analysis useful in identifying contamination risks.
NATA Accredited Testing for PFAS
Accreditation Number: 2901
Our partner laboratory is fully accredited to perform PFAS testing in blood, serum, biota, soil, water, and foam in accordance with Australian national standards.
With NATA accreditation, you can be confident that you're partnering with a laboratory that delivers reliable, high-quality results.
What Is NATA?
The National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) is the governing body that provides independent assurance of technical competence. It brings together best-practice industry experts for customers who demand confidence in the testing and analysis of products and services.
Fast, Affordable PFAS Testing at My Water Score
At My Water Score Australia, we pride ourselves on high-quality customer service. Our lab partner expertise, combined with advanced laboratory facilities, ensures rapid turnaround of results. All partners follow strict quality control protocols across all services.
With locations and laboratories across Australia, we're ready to help you with all your PFAS testing needs.
Our PFAS Testing Method
To deliver consistent, high-quality results, our partners combine liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This allows for precise detection of PFAS across various sample types including:
- Water
- Soil
- Serum
- Biota
They are currently accredited to quantify 28-40+ PFAS compounds. This includes volatile PFAS (e.g. 6:2 Fluorotelomer Alcohols) and newer AFFF formulation precursors such as 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide alkylbetaine (6:2 FTAB).
We Also Analyse the Following PFAS Compounds and Precursors
- Perfluorooctanesulfonamides
- Perfluorooctanesulfonamidoethanols
- Perfluorooctanesulfonamidoacetic acids
- Fluorinated Telomer Sulfonates (e.g. 4:2 FTS, 6:2 FTS, 8:2 FTS, 10:2 FTS)
